Balsa Wood

Artist Statement

My wood sculpture also included wood, paper, masking tape, pins, and wood glue. The dimensions are 8.5 in x 11.5 in x 2 in. The element that my wood sculpture focuses on is space. Each of the individuals levels off the sculpture are landscape like in structure and form, reminding one of a Surrealist painting. The title is Inverted Landscape.

My paper sculpture included paper, wood, pins, masking tape, and wood glue. The dimensions are 8 in x 3 ft 6 in x 1 in. The element that my paper sculpture focuses on is symmetry, and playing off of what is symmetrical. At first glance, with its dreamcatcher like appearance, the sculpture looks and feels symmetrical, but at closer inspection the paper in the center curls and moves differently, and has a different width and height from piece to piece. The title is Rain.

Fluxus Box

Artist Statement My Fluxus Box was inspired by the movie Heathers. The title is H & V. In the making of the box itself, I used cardboard, tape and glue to create the structure. In the decorating of the box and the making of the objects, I looked at certain characters in the story as archetypes, and methods of talking about each specific issue that the movie mentioned. The main character Veronica, is an an abusive relationship with JD, who turns out to be a school shooting suicide bomber. The Heathers each have problems as well. One has bulimia, one tries to OD on pills, and the other is poisoned in the first half of the movie. In decorating my box, I glued scraps of articles and stories to the outside and interior of the box about these issues. Articles about drug overdose, teen suicides, eating disorders, domestic violence, and suicide bombers. The objects that go into the box were harder to come up with and make. The colors of the movie are an incredibly strong theme throu

Memento

Artist Statement The materials are stones and metal wire, dimensions are 6 x 1.5 x 4. The title is Fireplace. The memory that I chose for my memento was making s'mores with my mom when I was little. The stones are like the fireplace we had, I would always sit on the ledge and the stones would dig into my skin. I made two piles of stones, one representing me, and one is my mother. Both of the piles are encased in this metal wire pouch that is open at the top. The stones are not secured into the pouch, so they can be taken out and put back in. The wire is similar to the metal protector we had on our fireplace. I would always stare through the wire and at the flames, until my mom would tell me to back up. The wire pouch is made to cradle and protect the stones, and to be looked through.  The three forms of research I have are about loop yarn, stone fireplaces, and how to make wire mesh.  https://www.itsalwaysautumn.com/easy-finger-knitting-blanket-loop-yarn.html htt

On Longing

"The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale." I chose this picture of me next to the Arch of Constantine in Rome, because seeing the city for the first time really puts the size of the buildings and ruins into perspective. "The souvenir reduces the public, the monumental, and the 3-dimensional, into the miniature that which can be enveloped by the lovely."  This picture is an example of me taking the public (leaves and flowers) and putting it into a journal that I can carry. While I cannot take that place and time with me literally, I can take this memento.  "To have a souvenir of the exotic, is to possess both a specimen, and a trophy." This picture is of one of the museums in the Vatican. Each of the Popes have a room of art and objects that they 'collected' some from exotic places, like Egypt, or from artist and sculptures that they commissioned. The Popes liked possessing specimens, and trophies. "Nostalgia ca
